Our history

Traditional Livestock Production and Breeding has been a major preoccupation of over 25 million people in Africa. The dominant system of production is pastoralism where livestock depend on natural grasslands and water. This system of traditional stockbreeding necessitates its practitioners to move from one place to another because of the variable environmental conditions from one season to another. Thus, traditional stockbreeders engage in seasonal movements, often crossing regional and international boundaries. The contributions of livestock to the development of the African economy and providing livelihood to its populations are well documented. Indeed, the livestock economy is the major supplier of protein in the continent, makes a significant contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) and foreign exchange earning of all African countries. Over the years, the economy and livelihood of traditional stockbreeders have been greatly affected by expanding populations, decreasing land space for livestock grazing, increasing deterioration of the grasslands due to climate change leading to desertification and other natural processes, endemic diseases and parasites, skewed agricultural development policies, abysmally low levels of literacy and of course inter and intra group conflicts, insurgency, rural banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping in various countries. One of the most pronounced effects of this development is the increasing clash between herdsmen and farmers, which have now posed a serious security challenge to most parts of the African continent. The Sahelian and Sudanese region of Africa has for ages been known to possess lush pastures with traditional stockbreeding as the major economic occupation of its people. Changing climatic and environmental conditions, rapid increase of population and urbanization of the region have gradually adversely affected this situation. As a result of this, both dairy and meat products have become scarce with damaging effects on the growth, health and personality of the people of the whole area. Furthermore the dwindling of natural pastures in the region has led to incessant clashes between herdsmen and other farmers when the former are transiting to new pastures or seeking nutrition for their stock. These clashes are now posing serious security danger to the whole region. Considerable and commendable efforts have been made in the past few decades by various national and transnational organizations to find amicable solution to the foregoing challenges. These organizations include APESS, UEPL and ACPP of Burkina Faso, Lawol Fulfulde and Kawtal Pulaaku of Benin, MBOSCUDA of Cameroun, ADP SECI of Cote d’Ivoire, Tabital Pulaaku, BADIA, ADG, ADECK and Cooperative des eleveurs of Mali, FNEN-DADDO, Lawol Baali, Association Ballaka Durgol, ROPPA, RBM, AREN and ANPME-Soumpo of Niger, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Al-Hayah, NCNE, FMARD/NLPD,NBC, CBDC, REIWA, MOFDA and PARE of Nigeria,  FNEC of  RCA, Maison des eleveurs and Comite Rural Gaya of Senegal, AEN and AJNDRPET of Tchad, Al-massar charity Organization of Sudan.

02

Intervention

This is intended to serve as a veritable structure to coordinate the activities of the organizations of traditional stockbreeders who share common concerns and interests in the region. By this development, all member organizations and nations are called upon to use their good offices to support this initiative both within Nigeria and beyond in recognition of their influence on the policies and programmes that are being pursued by regional and sub-regional organizations including the African Union, the African Development Bank, the Africa Business Forum and ECOWAS among others.

03

Awareness

The recent formation of transnational organizations such as African Union (A.U.), Africa Business Forum, ECOWAS and Africa Round Table have galvanized various stakeholders in Africa and indeed the Sahelian and Sudanese region to come together and mutually face the various challenges before them. It is in this spirit that the various Stockbreeders associations in the region have agreed to form an apex body, the Confederation of Traditional Stockbreeders Organization (CORET).
